WELCOME!
WE'RE GLAD YOU'RE HERE

We are a group of believers who simply try to follow the Bible as a guide for all we do. Everything done in our worship service is something for which we have a Bible basis. You are welcome to participate as much or as little as you wish. We will sing hymns together and we will observe the Lord's Supper or Communion together. We will also have an opportunity to give to the work of God in this area. This collection is for the members here, and if you are visiting you should not feel and pressure to give. Our lesson time will be divided into two groups. The young children will go to our classroom area in the basement where they will be taught the Bible at a level they can understand. The adults will stay in the auditorium for a lesson at an adult level. We do try to serve the community, and if you have some needs that we can help you with, mention it to one of the members. Thank you for worshipping with us.

FAMILY NEWS

POTLUCK TODAY: Please plan to stay, we always have plenty of food. After the potluck we will conduct a worship service at Timbers at 2:30. We need you to sing, greet, and help the patients get around.

RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE IS HERE SEPTEMBER 8: One of the ways we serve the community is to allow the blood bank to have a donation session here using our building to do their important work. Tracey Brewer has been making the arrangements for this event, and the blood bank brings all of the equipment. We provide refreshments and help where needed, and we need volunteers to do that. If you can give blood, please do — and invite friends and neighbors to give as well. If you can help or bring items for people to have after they give blood, see Tracey today! She needs help!

DO YOUR PART: We are family, and there are a lot of our family and our friends that are having health issues and some are in a real battle. Take an hour this week, and call, visit, or send a card or letter to someone who is on the prayer list that Julie and Karl prepare. They have addresses on the back of the sheet, and if you do not have a directory let one of us know and we will get you one. We all need to be active in this. PLEASE DO YOUR PART!

TODAY'S LESSON

WHAT SAUL OF TARSUS SAW

Acts 26:19

John Clayton

INTRODUCTION — We all have a conversion experience.
A. Something moved us to be or not be a Christian.
What have you been converted to and why?
B. I share my story everywhere I go.
If I can come to faith, anyone can.
C. What does it take to make you change your life?
Let us see what Paul saw that we need to see.
I. PAUL SAW THAT HE WAS IGNORANT.
Ignorance is not stupidity, is not insanity.
Ignorance is destructive — true of all in life.
B. 1 Timothy 1:12-13 — What have you done that could have killed you?
C. Paul had all the tools to avoid being ignorant.
1. Galatians 1:14
2. Education does not mean you are not ignorant.
3. One does not have to be a genius to understand God.
II. PAUL SAW THAT HE WAS A SINNER.
A. 1 Timothy 1:15 — You do not have to be bad to be a sinner.
B. Conscience is no guide — Acts 23:1.
C. 1 John 1:8-10 — We lie if we claim to be sinless.
D. It takes guts to admit sin — pride, etc., get in the way.
III. PAUL SAW HE HAD TO BREAK WITH TRADITION.
A. Colossians 2:8 — We are pushed into tradition: by parents, by school, by peers, by media.
B. Matthew 15:9 — Rules are mostly traditions.
C. Philippians 3:4-8 — What traditions hold you?
IV. PAUL SAW A GREAT WORK BEFORE HIM.
A. Acts 26:16-18 — God had a purpose in creating you.
B. Why do you exist? What is your purpose in life?
C. Are you afraid of your purpose? — 1 Corinthians 2:1-5.
D. It is not up to us.
V. PAUL SAW PEOPLE RESIST HIS MESSAGE AND GOD.
A. Acts 26:26-29 — Are you “almost persuaded”?
B. You will eventually see these things, if not now.
Have you watched someone die?

MORE ON OUR BUILDING

We have a minor crisis on our hands right now because of the physical facility in which we meet. Our building is essentially sitting in a lake. The ground water level in this region is so high that water is and has been a constant problem for everyone in this neighborhood. We have sump pumps going virtually all the time in the basement to keep the water out. Over the years sand has escaped from under the floor of the basement, and the foundation is settling and developing cracks. We have been advised not to try to use the classrooms in the basement because there is a very small but real possibility of collapse.

In addition to the lot the building is sitting on, we have a lot next door which we mow and otherwise do not use. We also have a lot behind the houses on the south side of the building which is essentially unusable for anything but parking.

We have several options. The ones I have heard are:

  1. Hire a company to put in pillars to shore up the entire structure. This would require hammering out the basement and rebuilding it — probably very expensive.
  2. Tear down the building area that is over the basement (the current auditorium & office area), fill in the basement and pour a slab. Then rebuild that area as a slab facility with no basement. This would mean moving the furnace and new construction.
  3. Fill in the basement and build a new wing of classrooms on a new slab over a section of land not currently having a building on it.
  4. Keep the property and build a new facility on it.
  5. Sell the entire property and either rebuild somewhere else, rent a meeting place or meet in homes.

None of these options are easy or cheap. If we reject number 5 do we want to sell the two lots south of the building to finance construction? Do we want to borrow money to do it? First we need to get some expert advice on all our options. What we cannot do is nothing — the problem is just going to get worse. Be vocal! Let us know your thoughts. Winter is coming, we have to get reconstruction started.
