THE CHURCH OF CHRIST ON M 51 S

We welcome you to our worship services this morning. We hope that you will be encouraged and uplifted by our time together. We have no creed or set of rules to force on you. We simply rely on the Bible to tell us what to do and try to copy what we read the church in the first century did. We meet here every Sunday, but we also have Zoom available for those who are interested. Just ask and we will include you in our Zoom services. Call Karl Marcussen at 574-514-1400 for information.

The Songs of Christmas

INTRODUCTION
A. The songs sung at Christmas are a strange lot.
1. Some are funny spoofs.
2. Some are the work of classical artists.
3. Many are traditional songs in popular music.
B. Many reflect the biblical ignorance of our culture.
C. Some have an interesting message.
D. Our songbook has some interesting examples.
I. “HARK THE HERALD ANGELS SING” — #202 in our songbook
A. “Herald” — A crier — one who gives news.
B. “Incarnate” (verse 2) means embodied in flesh.
John 1:14 — What Jesus actually was.
C. “Healing in His wings” (verse 3).
1. “Wing” is from eber meaning strength.
2. See Isaiah 40:31 — The risen Christ with strength to bring light and life to us all.
II. SONGS CAN BE STEEPED IN HUMAN TRADITION.
A. “It Came upon the Midnight Clear” — #338 in our songbook
B. Angels do not need “golden harps” (verse 1).
C. Angels do not normally have wings (verse 2).
D. “Babel” is a city in the plain of Shinar.
1. Genesis 10:10; 11:9
2. The tower of Babel was located here where God confused the languages of mankind.
III. SOME SONGS JUST REJOICE AT GOD'S ACTIONS.
A. “Joy to the world” — #376 in our songbook
The “curse” in verse 3 is arat — Genesis 3:17-19.
B. “O Come, All Ye Faithful” — #464 in our songbook
C. “O Little Town of Bethlehem” — #490 in our songbook
IV. SOME SONGS HAVE ADDED THINGS.
A. “Silent Night, Holy Night” — #577 in our songbook
1. The shepherds in Luke 2:9 were frightened.
2. This was not in December.
3. The star was not celestial — likely shechaniah.
B. The beauty of the song makes it a classic.
V. CHRISTMAS IS NOT A DECLARATION OF FAITH — #679 in our songbook

A CHRISTMAS POEM FOR YOU

The following poem was written by Don Betts who is involved in helping us in our Does God Exist? ministry. I thought some of you might enjoy it even if some of it reflects some traditions we may not share in.

CRISTUS NATUS

It's arrived! Christmas twenty-twenty-three!
I'm still alive! And I'm happy to be me.
If I was someone else, would I feel this way?
This deep down love for someone on His special day!

I know you're jolly tool! What's Santa going to bring?
You've hung the holly; do you hear angels sing?
The tree is gaily trimmed, with bright lights burning;
Surely thoughts of Him, set prayer wheels a'turning!

True Christmas joy, has meaning far beyond
A gift list, with hope that Santa will respond.
Happily, we celebrate the Holy birth of He.
Who came to give the gift of life, for all eternity!

Do you feel His love with each resounding gong
As bells ring out and we share a Yuletide song?
Do the gifts 'neath the tree on Christmas morn
Reflect the gift given you, on the day that He was born?

Yes, I'm glad I'm me, in this extra special season!
'Tis Golgotha's tree, giving me the reason
For my heart filled with glee at living in “the way”
As I celebrate with you, another Merry Christmas Day!

Another season of love from me to all! Don Betts

As you watch all the seasonal activity going on, focus on the good things that are done and not the negatives that we can always find if we look far enough.

Our sign by the street!

Being thankful is not in a day, but it is a lifestyle!
