B. Where are you looking for answers? THE BACK PAGETHE BEATITUDES AND THE PROMISES OF GODIn our Sunday morning class, we have been discussing the “Sermon on the Mount.” This morning's sermon is taken from Matthew 5:5 which is a part of that sermon. If you have not been coming to the class at 10:00, then you may think that spending many weeks on one chapter of the Bible is ludicrous, but this chapter is so rich and so full of the wisdom of God that each verse just overflows with wisdom and with practical instruction about how to live our lives on an imperfect Earth. The word “beatitude” is an interesting word and is not well defined in the Bible or by Webster. Be-attitude might be the key, because it is our attitude that makes our journey on earth easy or hard. The literal meaning of the word “blessed” which all nine beatitudes begin with is “happy.” The meaning of the word is not funny or of good reputation. Probably the closest we can come to the concept of the word is to say one is content or satisfied. We can be content if our attitude is that we want our spiritual needs met above everything else. As you read through Matthew 5:1 – 16 what you see is a way of thinking. That way permeates all of the struggles we have in life. Mourning, violence, abuse of all kinds, persecution, evil thoughts, lust, war, ignorance, and a failure to understand our role in life are all radically affected by our attitude toward God, life, and our fellow man. In the rest of this sermon, Jesus attacks the things that stop us from having the contentment God wants us to have. Right at the top is the attitude that “I am going to live differently.” “You have heard that it said … but I tell you” is the defining cry of Jesus Christ. Let your attitude be different than what is around you in the world. — John Clayton Our sign by the street!Sign saying from Matthew 6:9 NLT |
