THE BACK PAGEHOW ARE WOMEN SAVED?At first glance that title may cause you to say “Well, that's a dumb question — women are saved the same way that men are!” That is certainly true, but today being Mother's Day brings us a special message about women that has more to do with opportunity than method. First Timothy 2:15 says “But women will find their salvation in motherhood if they never abandon faith, love, or holiness with self restraint” (New English Bible). This passage has nothing to do with getting pregnant, it has to do with motherhood. Many women find themselves pregnant but have no interest or desire to become a mother Being a mother has to do with giving a child security. Being a mother means lavishing love on the baby so that, as it grows, it has a good self image and a feeling of worth. Being a mother means teaching a child during the most formative years of its life about life and love and self restraint. The passage we are looking at lists these characteristics as part of a mother finding her own salvation in bringing these characteristics to her child. Women are saved by obeying God, but one part of obeying God is in how we live our lives. The Bible is clear about our needing to believe, about our need to repent and no longer be servants of sin, about confessing Christ as our Savior and about being buried in the waters of baptism to come forth a new creature; but, it is also clear that how we live our lives as Christians is equally important to our salvation. Romans 6 – 8 makes this so clear it is hard to miss. The role of motherhood is a role that God has made available to women, not to men. Women who decide to be mothers have a unique opportunity to raise another human being to be a soldier of God and a giant of faith. In 2 Timothy 1:5 Paul addresses Timothy's great faith, and Paul says that this faith came from his mother Eunice who got it from her mother Lois. We join the secular world today in honoring women who have chosen to be mothers and who have fulfilled that role in a way that has glorified God and brought others to be his workers on earth. — John Clayton Our sign by the street! |
