WELCOME!
WE'RE GLAD YOU'RE HERE

We are a group of believers who simply try to follow the Bible as a guide for all we do. Everything done in our worship service is something for which we have a Bible basis. You are welcome to participate as much or as little as you wish. We will sing hymns together and we will observe the Lord's Supper or Communion together. We will also have an opportunity to give to the work of God in this area. This collection is for the members here, and if you are visiting you should not feel and pressure to give. Our lesson time will be divided into two groups. The young children will go to our classroom area in the basement where they will be taught the Bible at a level they can understand. The adults will stay in the auditorium for a lesson at an adult level. We do try to serve the community, and if you have some needs that we can help you with, mention it to one of the members. Thank you for worshipping with us.

FAMILY NEWS

THANKS: Yesterday was quite a day for this congregation and the culmination of a lot of work. The purpose of the “Fun Fair” was to bring people in our area to our facility and get them to know who we are and that we want to be an active part of their lives. We have done a great deal to try to serve the people of our area, and for the first time we were able to bring about 300 people in direct contact with the church and what we do.

We need to express our special thanks to Mandy Wallace who spent massive amounts of time contacting people in the community, getting a front page story in the local newspaper, and coordinating the whole program. Our thanks to Bill and Patty Gibson for the tents and handling of numerous other details. Our thanks to Lana Fox for her work as the clown and to Tracey Brewer for managing the resfreshments.

We appreciate all who showed up Saturday, brought cookies, spent time making things work, and helping in set up and clean up. This was a huge project and thanks for everyone who had a part in it.

REMEMBER THIS TUESDAY'S ANNUAL PICNIC! You are all invited to the Claytons'. We eat at 6:00 P.M. Meat and drinks provided. Bring a dessert, salad, or covered dish. If you need directions see John or Cynthia Clayton.

2 Timothy 2:15

John Clayton

INTRODUCTION
A. You need to take the Bible literally! Look at who wrote it, to whom it was written,
....why it was written, and how the people it was written to understood it.
B. Atheist claims — see THE BACK PAGE below.
1. Much they object to is history, not theology.
2. Jephthah's vow in Judges 11-12, The Concubine in Judges 19, i.e.
C. Our own understanding — “My kingdom is not … ” — Matthew 5-7; John 18:26;
....1 Corinthians 15:50
I. THE OLD TESTAMENT WAS FOR PRIMITIVE MAN.
A. Man was ignorant (not stupid).
B. No government in place — Judges 17:6
C. Roles were clearly defined — men and women — Genesis 2:24.
1. Deuteronomy 25:5-6 — brother took on sibling's wife
2. When men violated roles the result was bad — David in 2 Samuel 12; 16:20-23; 20:1-3.
D. Slavery was a way of paying off debt — Leviticus 25:47-49.
II. JESUS CHRIST CALLED MAN TO A DIFFERENT WAY.
A. God's plan for marriage is restored — Matthew 19:8.
B. Civil authority replaced private law — Romans 13:1-7.
C. Women are elevated — Galatians 3:28.
D. Slaves are given equality to owners.
E. Miracles are faith issues, not science issues.
1. You accept it as stated in faith.
2. You can reject it as stated on faith (cannot prove a negative).
3. You can say it is a story to convey truth.
4. Much of the science is centuries ahead of itself — Proverbs 8:22 — quantum mechanics.
F. Jesus denied all political connections.
1. Matthew 22:17-21 — “My kingdom is NOT of … ”
2. John 18:36 — “My kingdom is not of this world.”
III. ARE YOU A PART OF THE KINGDOM OF CHRIST?
A. The Church is ekklesia — the called out — Matthew 16:18.
B. Acts 2:4 — God adds — not a political kingdom.

THE BACK PAGE

CHRISTIANITY — THE NEW TESTAMENT (WILL) OF GOD

Atheists complain about things in the Bible that they say fly in the face of women's rights, promote racism, justify slavery, and embrace unpopular politics. Today's lesson is a response to all of that, because these atheist challenges are rooted in ignorance and a poor understanding of the Bible. It is not just atheists who misunderstand what the Bible teaches on these issues. Many believers have also not read carefully what the Bible says, and have not understood the difference between the New and the Old Testament. Jesus addressed this in the Sermon on the Mount. Consider the differences:

MATTHEW OLD TESTAMENT NEW TESTAMENT
5:21 – 22 Do not murder Do not hate
5:27 – 28 No adultery Do not look to do it
5:32 – 37 No vain oaths Do not make oaths
5:38 – 42 Eye for an eye, etc. Do not retaliate
5:43 – 48 Hate your enemy Love your enemy
6:1 – 4 Give with publicity Give privately
6:5 – 8 Pray publicly Pray in private
6:16 – 18 Fast publicly Fast privately

In the letters to the churches there is a constant challenge to Christians not to return to the Old Law and its rules and regulations (scriptures are from KJV).

  • Hebrews 10:12-20 — The new covenant is called “a new and living way which he [has] consecrated for us.”
  • Colossians 2:9-18 and 3:10-11 — Jesus blotted “out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, … and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross.”
  • 2 Timothy 2:15 — “Rightly dividing the word of truth.”
