WELCOME!
WE'RE GLAD YOU'RE HERE

We are a group of believers who simply try to follow the Bible as a guide for all we do. Everything done in our worship service is something for which we have a Bible basis. You are welcome to participate as much or as little as you wish. We will sing hymns together and we will observe the Lord's Supper or Communion together. We will also have an opportunity to give to the work of God in this area. This collection is for the members here, and if you are visiting you should not feel and pressure to give. Our lesson time will be divided into two groups. The young children will go to our classroom area in the basement where they will be taught the Bible at a level they can understand. The adults will stay in the auditorium for a lesson at an adult level. We do try to serve the community, and if you have some needs that we can help you with, mention it to one of the members. Thank you for worshipping with us.

FAMILY NEWS

FOOD FARE RECEIPTS: SpartanNash donates money to the food pantry based on receipts from Family Fare. A $1,000.00 donation was recently made and receipts are closing in for what would be a fourth $1,000.00 donation since the program started. If you shop at Family Fare, please save your receipts for this purpose. If you have a question about this see Patty Gibson.

THANKS to those of you who have sent cards and notes to the people dealing with health and family issues. We have received notes from several people who are not members of our congregation expressing thanks for the encouragement given them by the cards they have received. We are maintaining the prayer list, even with Karl and Julie out of town.

WILLIE FRANKLIN IS COMING SEPTEMBER 28. Last year we had Willie Franklin here for a youth rally and activity day. Surrounding congregations were invited to bring their young people and join us, and several congregations did. We are repeating the youth rally with brother Franklin this year and hope to have a bigger crowd than last year. We will provide lunch. Willie will also preach for us that Sunday. Keep that weekend clear on your schedule.

INTRODUCTION — Luke 18:10-14
A. Scripture is full of reversals
B. Always has lessons for us — two characters
1. Pharisee — religious man who follows the rules
2. Publican — tax collector, a shyster
I. RELIGIOUS GUY FELT SUPERIOR
A. Luke 18:11-12 — prayed about himself.
B. Luke 18:9 — Purpose of the story
C. Romans 2:17-24
1. Do we habitually dishonor God (Matthew 5:14-16)?
2. How are we “lights?” What sets us apart?
II. RELIGIOUS GUY SAW NO DEEP NEED FOR GOD.
A. Luke 7:36-50 — Her need versus Pharisee's need (Luke 7:44).
B. What does it take for you to need God?
III. RELIGIOUS GUY IS KEEPING SCORE.
A. Tallying achievements — fasts, giving, etc.
B. No concept of God's grace. Look at Paul (Philippians 3:5-6). How did Paul view his accomplishments?
C. How do we keep score?
IV. RELIGIOUS GUY FEELS HE IS ENTITLED.
A. Compares himself to others (Psalm 18:27) — God's promise.

1. Matthew 19:22-24
2. Matthew 19:25-26
3. Matthew 19:27-30

AREA EVENTS

One of the unfortunate changes that has happened in the congregations in our area in recent years has been an attitude of isolationism setting in. Congregations seem to be looking inward instead of outward. This is reflected in the fact that very little evangelism is taking place and special meetings between congregations are getting fewer and fewer. In previous years there were monthly singings, retreats, gospel meetings, youth rallies, and lectureships. Now we see congregations keeping house and pulling away from association with other congregations.

We need to work to change this. Not only do we as a congregation need to continue the things we are doing to invite other congregations to be a part of, but we need to support their efforts as well. Here are some efforts others are making that we are aware of and need to support:

18TH ANNUAL LADIES INSPIRATIONAL DAY — September 28, 2019: It starts at 8:30 A.M. on with breakfast and lunch provided. Three ladies are speaking: Tracy Lazarino, Barb Caudill and Judy Reece-Powers. The contact person for this program at the Goshen Church of Christ is Carol Harper, cobalt29@hotmail.com. That is the day of our Youth Rally with Willie Franklin; so, a few of our ladies will need to be here. Those women not involved in the youth work that Samantha is doing would be free to go.

AREA CHURCH OF CHRIST FALL PICNIC — October 19: The picnic starts at 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. at Camp Indogan. I suspect that Karl and Julie will be going to this, and could take anyone who would like to be a part of it. Information is available at Brad@abiblecommentary.com.

SENIOR ACTIVITIES. As far back as the 1970s there has been an area wide senior activity program in operation. That program continues to be active and a number of folks here participate — even though some of them are not technically seniors. A monthly bulletin is put out with information about seniors in the area, and articles and opportunities for seniors are presented. If you are not on the mailing list for this and want to be, give your name and mailing address to John Clayton or Karl Marcussen. You can get it electronically or by USPS mail. This group meets the first Tuesday of each month at Golden Corral in Mishawaka at 11:00 A.M. for a brunch. The third Tuesday of each month there is a senior devo and fellowship at 7:00 P.M. at the Claytons' house. Everyone is welcome!
