FAMILY NEWS OF
THE M-51 CHURCH OF CHRIST

This is the church bulletin for the congregation of the Church of Christ that meets in Dowagiac, Michigan, on M 51 just south of the city. Ordinarily we meet on Sunday morning for Bible study and worship and also on Sunday evening and Wednesday night for a Bible study. Since the pandemic forced us into not having meetings at our building we have been meeting via Zoom on our smartphones, tablets, and computers. After almost two months of worship under the trees we have moved into the building with our Zoom meetings for those who are not able to meet in person. Everyone is welcome to participate in this worship service at 11:00 on Sunday morning. If you want to participate with Zoom, contact Karl Marcussen at 574-514-1400 to get the information to join us.

DUE to the COVID-19 pandemic
and government mandates we
will not have Bible classes until further notice.

FAMILY NEWS

WELCOME TO OUR VISITORS: Like everyone else, we are trying to avoid COVID-19 among all of us. Some of us are more vulnerable than others. We ask everyone to keep six feet from others and wear a mask so that no one becomes ill by attending worship. Some of us will be participating virtually through Zoom at home and others will be in the building. If in the future you wish to participate in Zoom at home contact Karl Marcussen at 574-514-1400 and he will help you join us.

THANKS TO KARL, GERRY, AND RICHARD who have the technical know how to enable us to use technology to avoid the pandemic. They have spent many hours working on getting rid of the “bugs” and allowing us to worship safely.

OUR THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO WORKED ON THE FOOD TRUCK this past Thursday. This is a great service to the community, and we have so many people who have spent great amounts of time and energy making our Food Bank work. “Then the King [Jesus] will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink … whatever you did for one of the least of these … you did for me’ ” (Matthew 25:34-40).

SHULTS-LEWIS COMMODITY DRIVE: Shults-Lewis has moved our date to October for them to pick up the commodities to use in their work with children. Our commodities are paper towels and canned fruit. We encourage you to get these items when you can and get them to the building. If no one is there when you come, put them on the pew in the lobby of the auditorium. Contact one of us if you need transportation or help getting into the building to leave your donation.

THE BACK PAGE

MADE IN GOD'S IMAGE

One of the things we tend to forget is that every human being is created in the image of God, even those we do not like. Romans 12:10-11 tells us “Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.” The word “honor” in the original language means to treat with great respect.

One of the primary points made in the Genesis account is that man is unique. We are not unique biologically. Not only are we made of the “dust of the earth” like all other living things, but our bodies are made to survive on planet Earth and that means we will have similar design physically to every other living thing. The media thinks it is amazing when we discover that an animal does the same thing we do. The use of tools and the making of tools, for example, is seen in many animals, but God has given animals many different ways of securing food, and tool making is just one of them.

So how do we see our uniqueness expressed? What does being created in the image of God do for us? One thing is that it gives us creativity. I marvel at the ability of several among us to paint a picture or make music. No animal does these things, even though some animals have intelligence equal or higher than some humans. Being created in the image of God is what allows us and motivates us to worship God, a Creator, a higher being.

Have you ever wondered why isolated human populations have some concept of God? It may be expressed in strange ways, but humans have always worshiped. No animal has ever given any indication of a spiritual awareness. We live in an age when there is conflict over the value of a human being. Abortion, euthanasia, and racial prejudice are all fundamentally rooted in not understanding that human life is special because all humans are created in God's image. I honor you because of your spiritual make up. Let us worship together.
