DUE to the COVID-19 pandemic FAMILY NEWSWELCOME TO OUR VISITORS: Like everyone else, we are trying to avoid COVID-19 among all of us. Some of us are more vulnerable than others. We ask everyone to keep six feet from others and wear a mask so that no one becomes ill by attending worship. Some of us will be participating virtually through Zoom at home and others will be in the building. If in the future you wish to participate on Zoom at home contact Karl Marcussen and he will help you join us. SIDEWALK CONSTRUCTION: During the re-construction on our building in the past two years, the sidewalk leading to the main entrance to our building got badly cracked. That is a busy entrance with the Food Bank materials coming in and out and delivery and pick up materials for things like Shults-Lewis taking place fairly regularly. It is an eye sore to visitors. With all that in mind and with winter approaching we are going to have the existing sidewalk broken up and removed, and a new sidewalk put in. We need to get it done in the next week or so. We have had estimates to have this done commercially and it looks like it will cost between $3000 and $4000 to get this done. We are planning to put re-bar in this time due to the heavy traffic that sometimes comes into our building from that direction. If you have any questions about this, please see Bill Gibson. If we do not hear from you, we assume you are OK with doing this now at that price range. THANKS JULIE: We work very hard at making sure everyone has good communication about what is going on and on the physical needs of everyone in the congregation. Julie Marcussen does an incredible job of giving us a list every Sunday of the latest needs. Thanks Julie for your hard work and for all the time you spend keeping us informed. TODAY'S LESSON
INTRODUCTION — (Two songs we just sang: SONG “I Believe in Jesus” and “Living by Faith.”)
A. Substance “hupostasis” — to be a foundation.
I. THE CREATION IS A FOUNDATION — Hebrews 11:3.
1. We all live by faith. Question is “in what?”
B. “Sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” What do you have faith in?2. Atheist assertion that they only believe what they can see is nonsense. 3. What your faith is also is your foundation. C. Real faith is never blind or irrational. A. Look up or go to apod.nasa.gov
II. QUANTUM MECHANICS MAKES SENSE OF FAITH.
B. Either it had a beginning or it is eternal. 1. The evidence is strong that it had a beginning.
C. Was it caused or uncaused — a product of chance?
2. “Big bang” evidence, laws of physics 1. If it was caused, there has to be a causer. 2. Chance is an invalid mechanism for the creation. 3. We see design everywhere we look. A. Wave/particle duality and electrons
III. CAIN AND ABEL DEMONSTRATE WORKING FAITH.
1. Similar to Father/Son/Spirit and to body/soul
B. Every new scientific discovery boosts our faith.
2. See THE BACK PAGE below. A. Hebrews 11:4; 1 John 3:11-24
IV. ENOCH DEMONSTRATES THE FRUIT OF FAITH.
B. What does your faith move you to do? C. Working faith brings huge blessings. A.Hebrews 11:5-6 — Do you want eternal life?
B. Two men have lived without dying — Elijah & Enoch 1. Elijah in 2 Kings 2:11 — “Walked with God”
C. “Walked with God” = total obedience.
2. Enoch in Jeremiah 10:23-24 — “Walked with God” 1. Acts 2:37 — what was the answer?
2. 1 John 1:5-7 — Walk with God = walk in the light. 3. Will you walk with God? Walk in the light? THE BACK PAGETHE GODHEAD AND QUANTUM MECHANICSWe are all familiar with the “Father, Son and Holy Spirit” passages throughout the New Testament, and in Acts 17:22-31, we see Paul explaining this in Athens; but, we struggle with what that means. It may be that quantum mechanics can help. In quantum mechanics things like photons (light), electrons, protons, and neutrons are governed by principles that are very different from the physical world we are all familiar with. In all of these cases there are experiments where the particle behaves like a particle; but other experiments where it behaves like a wave. L. de Broglie in 1924 introduced wave-particle duality — the idea that any matter, whatever its size, has an associated wavelength. Particles like photons have the ability to knock electrons out of a material in the photoelectric effect (electric eye). These are physical properties that only particles can do, but the photon will also show diffraction properties explainable only if the photon is a wave. Electrons produce the same effects as light, yet we can measure their mass. How can it be both? It is strange, but it is a fact and just one area where duality occurs. There is also a principle of complementarity in quantum mechanics that says that the result of an observation is dependent on the focus of the observer. In other words, in experiments when the focus of our observation is on one variable, this precludes the simultaneous observation of its complement. Wave and particle-related properties are complementary variables. The Bible presents the notion that body, soul, and spirit are not separate entities but are separate dimensions of a person. Although body and spirit are united in a person, the presence of these dimensions means that a person is capable of dual behavior. Understanding quantum mechanics allows us to understand this. Ranjit Thuraisingham, a research scientist, says it this way, “The science of quantum objects teaches us why we fail to discern this spiritual dimension in ourselves. In quantum objects, focusing only on one variable precludes the observation of the complementary variable. Thus, the absence of observing the spiritual is related to our focus solely on the material.” We struggle with the spiritual because of our fixation with the material world in which we live. — John Clayton Our sign by the street!
