FAMILY NEWSLADIES: We have announced a “Ladies Day” program at the Church of Christ in Goshen on September 18 with Alma Jones, a well-known speaker. If you would like to go, let Patty Gibson or John Clayton know and we will arrange transportation. Lunch is provided and the program is always good. We need to register the number that are goining by Sept. 7, so let us know. ZOOM IS STILL AVAILABLE. With the new surge in COVID we know that there are some new risks. We are maintaining Zoom, and while the system does not always work perfectly, you can participate in worship if you are unable or unwilling to be at the building due to COVID. If you are on Zoom and lose signal, just reboot and you will be able to get back on (at least most of the time). If you choose to come to the building, especially if you are not vaccinated, please wear a mask. SUNDAY NIGHT SERVICE. We have had several people ask about when we are going to resume a Sunday evening class. We have held off on this because of COVID and the problem of where to hold the class. We are considering starting a class on how we know what the Bible says is from God and is true, and we have a DVD series available from the Does God Exist? ministry on this subject. Let us know your opinion on this. TODAY'S LESSON

THE BACK PAGEBEING A PECULIAR PEOPLE“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people; that you may make known the perfections of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9). Jesus “who gave himself for us that he might free us from all iniquity and secure for himself a peculiar people with real enthusiasm for doing kind things for others” (Titus 2:14). We need to be sure that our being peculiar is not viewed by the world around us as weird. As Christians we have to deal with reality and with the same problems that everyone else has. 1 Corinthians 10:13 tells us as Christians that, “There is no temptation that has taken you but such as is common to man … .” We are not given immunity from problems just because we are Christians. If that were the case, we would have people coming to Christ to escape their current problems. I have had people who came to church regularly complain to me that they could not see how being a Christian changed anything. They still had the same issues that they had always had no matter how much they prayed about it or how regularly they attended services. Being a “peculiar people” is not being free of problems. If you keep reading 1 Corinthians 10:13 you will see that Christians are promised “a way out” which God provides. The two verses we started with give two different views of being “peculiar.” Peter's reference is to life and living in a way that is different than the world. I do not have to worry about “darkness” because God gives me the strength to avoid drugs, abuse, materialism, and all the other things that bring darkness into people's lives. Titus deals with the fact that Christians will get involved in bringing good things to others. We are peculiar to people who are obsessed with materialism because we give to help others. We use our resources to feed the hungry, to provide clothing, to clean up the world's mess both spiritually and physically — John Clayton Our sign by the street!
