TO OUR VISITORS

The family of God here at Dowagiac Church of Christ wishes to extend to you a warm welcome.  If you have questions about our worship services and why we do what we do, we will be glad to give you a biblical answer.  The uniqueness of the Church of Christ is that we are trying to restore to the best of our ability those things that we see the first century Church doing.  We are also working hard at building the spirit, unity, and love that Jesus taught and prayed for.  We have no clergy, but are working together as equal co-workers trying to serve one another and the area in which we live.  Come study with us, grow with us, and serve with us as we strive to do God’s will in all things.

CLASSES

We encourage you to take advantage of the Bible classes that we have regularly.  Tonight we will continue a study of why God has two testaments--the New and the Old.  Join us as we learn about the different types of books that are in the Bible and why they are there.  Our Wednesday night class is taking us through the miracles that God used with Moses as the Israelites came out of Egypt.  This is a complex study and gives us some great insight as to how God functions in today’s world.  Our Sunday morning class continues to look at Daniel and some of the implications of his life and the book in the Bible that tells us about what happened during that time.  Join us for these wonderful studies.

FAMILY NEWS

Wanda Kirst is recovering pretty well and hopes to be with us again soon.  Keep Marianne Slack and Maelene Salmons in your prayers as they continue to battle illnesses.  Phyllis Clayton was admitted to the hospital Monday and had been undergoing exhaustive tests to attempt to find out what was wrong.  She had lost nearly 30 pounds and was very weak.  Phyllis passed away early Friday morning.  Our condolences are with John and her family.

Our congratulations to Kamoka Castaneda who received her BS in Nursing this past week.  That is a wonderful accomplishment and will open many opportunities to her.  We urge our young people to follow her example of continuing to grow and expand your training to improve your ability to serve.

MOTHER’S DAY

We have a lot of holidays in our culture, but most of them center on pleasure or greed in one way or another.  The exception to that are holidays that focus on thanksgiving.   Today is one of those thanksgiving holidays--giving thanks to the special women who have blessed our lives through their roles as mothers.  The role of a mother is not fulfilled in giving birth.  Lots of women give birth to a baby but are not mothers in any literal sense.  In today’s world of “looking after number one” selfishness precludes being a mother.  We have all seen the terrible abuse that women who are biological baby bearers and nothing more have heaped on innocent children.  There have even been babies killed by their mothers because they did not want the responsibility of raising the child.

Proverbs 31:10-31 tells us about a woman who fulfills the role of being a mother.  What is described is a person who has made a commitment and works at it.  She manages the feeding of her family (verses 14-15), she makes sure everyone in her family is clothed (verse 21), she supports her husband in his business (verse 23), she manages the household finances (verse 16), and she handles benevolence (verse 20).

This congregation is blessed with incredibly strong women who do all of the things that Proverbs 31 talks about.  These women have blessed the community of Dowagiac with providing food and clothing for people who are less fortunate.  They have set an example to the children of this Church and have acted to teach and motivate the children spiritually.  They have encouraged and supported the men of this congregation as they strive to grow and mature as Christians.  Our women have also taken the lead in making the community aware of the presence of the congregation, and the stand the Church takes on the vital issues of our day.

We join with the world in expressing our thanks to the wonderful women who have blessed and continue to bless us all.   HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!!!
